Ghorepani–Poonhill–Ghandruk Trek: A Short Journey into the Heart of Nature and Culture
The Ghorepani–Poonhill–Ghandruk Trek is one of the most scenic and accessible short treks in Nepal, perfect for those with limited time but a strong desire to experience the majestic Himalayas and the vibrant local culture of the Annapurna region. In just a few days, this trek offers a beautiful mix of lush rhododendron forests, snow-capped mountains, ethnic villages, and unforgettable sunrises over the Himalayas.
How to Get There
Your adventure begins in Kathmandu, where you can enjoy a cultural sightseeing tour of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Boudhanath, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), and Pashupatinath. From Kathmandu, a short 30-minute flight or a scenic 5–7 hour drive takes you to Pokhara, Nepal’s picturesque lake city.
After a night in Pokhara, youll drive for about 2 hours to Nayapul, the official starting point of the trek. The trail then follows this route:
Nayapul – Tikhedhunga – Ghorepani – Poon Hill – Tadapani – Ghandruk – Pokhara. From Pokhara, youll return to Kathmandu.
What You’ll See: Nature at Its Finest
This trek is famous for its stunning natural diversity. As you walk through the dense rhododendron forests, especially vibrant in spring, you’ll be surrounded by rich biodiversity. Listen to the songs of Himalayan birds, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and cross charming waterfalls and small streams.
The highlight is Poon Hill (3210m)—a short hike from Ghorepani early in the morning rewards you with a panoramic sunrise view over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, including Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Himchuli, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri.
Cultural Experience: Gurung and Magar Heritage
Equally rewarding is the cultural immersion you’ll experience along the trail. The trek winds through Gurung and Magar villages, where youll witness their traditional lifestyle, warm hospitality, and unique customs.
In Ghandruk, one of the most beautiful Gurung villages in Nepal, you can visit the Gurung Museum, Buddhist monasteries, ACAP headquarters, and interact with locals to learn more about their daily life, cuisine, and spiritual beliefs. Ghandruk also offers an iconic view of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South, right from the village.
Accommodation on the Trail
In Kathmandu and Pokhara, accommodations range from budget to luxury, depending on your preference. Along the trekking route, comfortable guesthouses and lodges provide clean rooms, basic amenities, and local meals. In Ghorepani and Ghandruk, you can even find rooms with attached bathrooms.
Trek Difficulty and Fitness Level
This is a relatively easy to moderate trek, ideal for beginners and families. The most challenging part is the 3,380-step climb from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani, but the views and sense of achievement at the top are well worth the effort. No previous trekking experience is needed—just a basic level of fitness and a love for nature.
Best Time to Go
The best seasons are:
Spring (February to May) – colorful rhododendrons and mild weather
Autumn (September to December) – clear skies and excellent mountain views
Winter (December–January) is also possible, but mornings and nights can be quite cold. Summer/monsoon (June–August) is less popular due to rain and leeches but still possible with proper planning.
Weather Overview
Days are generally warm and sunny, while nights can be chilly, especially at higher elevations like Ghorepani. Weather is most stable in spring and autumn.
